Minor to appear in court for possession of firearm

The learner was arrested on August 14 at a school in Klipgat.

A 15-year-old learner is expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Children’s Court on August 21 after being arrested for possession of a stolen firearm and ammunition.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, the learner was arrested on August 14 at a school in Klipgat after the principal reported finding him with a firearm and six rounds of ammunition.

“On arrival, the principal showed the police a firearm and ammunition, as well as the learner who was allegedly found in possession of the items,” said Funani.

She said the learner was arrested after he claimed the firearm belonged to his missing brother.

“Preliminary investigations revealed the firearm was reported stolen in Mabopane on July 11.”

Funani said the learner was assessed by social workers on August 15 and placed under his parents’ care.

She added that police are still searching for the learner’s missing brother.

District commissioner Modisagaarekwe Mosimanegape has urged parents and firearm owners to keep their firearms secure to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands, as it poses a danger to the community.
