Widespread power outage in the East of Pretoria after explosion

Residents reported hearing two large explosions, while others could see a large plume of black smoke coming from the Njala substation near Rietvlei.

A large part of Pretoria was left without power on Saturday morning affecting areas from Moreleta Park to Villieria.

Many residents in the Moreleta Park area reported hearing a large explosion just before 08:00.

Ward 82 councillor Siobhan Muller confirmed a trip at the Njala substation on Saturday morning, saying “We don’t have much more information at this stage.”

She said that the outage was affecting a large part of the East and parts of the Moot.

“The substation feeds to other substations, such as the Lynnwood substation, which feeds most of ward 82.”

She said wards West of the N1 were off, while many East of the N1 were also affected, confirming that teams were dispatched.

Ward 41 councillor Ben Chapman said that his ward was also affected, although residents did not report hearing an explosion.

Chapman said that his ward, which includes Murrysfield, Meyerspark, and La Montagne, was also affected by the power outage.

This is a developing story.
