Tshwane reports progress in advancing Hammanskraal water quality

The metro is set to host an imbizo on August 17 to offer residents an opportunity to receive updates on the timeline for clean water availability and discuss their concerns or questions.

The Tshwane metro has announced significant strides in addressing the critical issue of clean drinking water in Hammanskraal through two major initiatives.

These are the upgrade of the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant and the establishment of the Magalies Water Package Plant.

According to MMC for Utilities, Themba Fosi, these projects underscore the metro’s commitment to improving water infrastructure and providing residents with reliable access to potable water.

Fosi said the Rooiwal upgrade represents a pivotal development in the metro’s efforts to enhance its wastewater management capabilities.

He said construction has officially begun, marking a substantial move towards expanding the plant’s capacity to treat wastewater effectively.

“The installation of the ClearVu fence around the plant is nearing completion, with 93% of the fencing at the north works and 100% at the east works already in place.

Mechanical and electrical repairs are progressing well, including the installation of blowers and belt presses.

“In the upcoming months, work will focus on constructing two primary sedimentation tanks, refurbishing the east flow balancing tank and pump station, and upgrading the anaerobic digesters at Rooiwal West Works,” said Fosi.

Fosi said that to ensure timely completion, additional resources are being allocated to expedite cleaning and repair tasks.

“The city is collaborating with the Department of Water and Sanitation, National Treasury, and the Development Bank of Southern Africa, which is acting as the managing agent, to accelerate solutions and address Hammanskraal’s water challenges effectively.”

He said the metro has initiated an interim measure to provide residents with immediate access to clean drinking water through the Magalies Water Package Plant in tandem with the Rooiwal upgrades.

“This partnership with Magalies Water and the Department of Water and Sanitation aims to deliver potable tap water to the affected areas of Hammanskraal.

“An extensive audit of 37 620 households revealed that 23 616 water meters are operational,” he said.

He said roughly 14 004 meters will need to be replaced between September and November this year.

“This replacement is essential for ensuring clean water can be supplied efficiently. The metro has decided to write off historic debts associated with the audited meters, allowing residents to start anew with access to clean tap water.”

The metro is set to host an imbizo on August 17 to offer residents an opportunity to receive updates on the timeline for clean water availability and discuss any concerns or questions they may have.

Residents from the three affected wards are encouraged to attend this important engagement to stay informed about the progress and the future of their water supply.
