New Akasia CPF committee elected to tackle crime

According to newly elected public relations officer Lerato Makwe, the new committee members need to address specific challenges, such as illegal immigrants at abandoned properties and the co-ordination of street patrols.

Akasia in the north of Pretoria recently elected its new community policing forum (CPF) to work with the police community to wipe out crime in the area.

This comes after the community raised concerns over the duties carried out by the CPF, saying they are no longer visible in the area.

Akasia has been plagued by a series of crimes, ranging from robberies at residential and non-residential properties, to hijackings, tyre spiking and assault.

The area’s major route, the R80 Mabopane highway, has also been affected by violent robberies.

Newly elected public relations officer Lerato Makwe said the selection of the new CPF members prioritised individuals with a strong background in community safety, law enforcement and public engagement.

She said experience in managing community projects, conflict resolution and familiarity with the local crime landscape were key qualifications.

“The ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies, local businesses and residents was essential.

“The new members also needed to demonstrate leadership skills and a genuine commitment to improving the Akasia community’s safety and well-being,” said Makwe.

She said community feedback played a crucial role in the selection process where residents were encouraged to voice their concerns, suggest potential candidates and provide input on the qualities they believed were essential for the role.

“This feedback was carefully considered by the selection committee, ensuring that the chosen member reflected the community’s needs and expectations. The engagement with the community also helped to build trust and transparency in the selection process.”

She said that the background of the new CPF members aligns closely with the current needs and challenges of the Akasia community.

“With a solid understanding of local crime patterns, the new members bring innovative ideas for crime prevention and community engagement. Their experience in grassroots initiatives will be instrumental in addressing specific issues such as illegal immigration, abandoned properties and youth empowerment.”

She explained that new members need to address specific challenges, such as illegal immigrants at abandoned properties and the co-ordination of street patrols.

“Enhancing communication between the community and law enforcement, and improving trust in the CPF’s initiatives, are also areas of focus.

“Addressing these challenges with strategic planning and collaboration will be crucial for long-term success,” said Makwe.

The newly elected CPF members are as follows:

– Chairperson: William Motshoene

– Deputy Chairperson: Eric Tsiane

– Secretary: Peter Mathiza

– Deputy secretary: Juliet Sebothuma

– Treasurer: Anna Baloyi

– Public Relations Officer: Lerato Makwe

Additional members are Godfrey Makhura, Boitumelo Selaledi, Philani Ndlala, Elna Bouillan, Morris Cobus and Mpho Thukwana.
