East operation nets more than 350 suspects

Among the arrests were three drug dealers with various narcotics in their possession.

Police arrested 362 suspects in Brooklyn and Garsfontein through their high-density operations commonly known as Operation Shanela.

The operation was held on Thursday (August 15) in the eastern parts of Pretoria to intercept criminal activities and target criminal hotspots within the precinct.

The operation included patrols in high-crime areas, compliance inspections, the search of premises and the crackdown on illegal alcohol sales.

Tshwane’s detective teams arrested 286 suspects, including 75 suspects for gender-based violence (GBV) crimes, one for murder, six for attempted murder, 11 for armed robbery, and five suspects for rape.

“Three tactical groups comprising of various departments formed and were deployed to crime hotspots in the two policing areas. [A total of] 73 undocumented immigrants were arrested and detained, and will be deported after all the legal processes are finalised,” said spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Johan van Dyk.

In total, 822 individuals, 45 premises, and 587 vehicles were searched. Twenty-three vehicles were tested to ensure that they were not stolen.

Three suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs when heroin, crystal meth and dagga with R1 010 cash were found in their possession.

A total of 177 traffic violation notices were issued, amounting to R92 100 in fines.

Home Affairs department, Gauteng Traffic, Tshwane metro police, CPFs and officers from various SAPS stations lend a helping hand during the raids.
