Water maintenance enters final stretch

No water will be pumped to Mapleton Reservoir for three days and five hours starting from July 26.

Tshwane is pleading with locals to reduce water usage as it enters its third and last phase of Rand Water’s large-scale maintenance of water infrastructure around Gauteng.

The last project on the maintenance programme – the Mapleton and Palmiet systems that supply water to Tshwane – resumes on July 29.

During this period, Rand Water will not be pumping any water into Mapleton for 77 hours.

Rand Water told the metro last month that the maintenance programme that started on June 22 across Gauteng aimed at preserving the lifespan of its infrastructure and improving its reliability during the higher summer demand.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said reducing water consumption will enable Tshwane to fill its reservoirs to maximum capacity.

He said this will involve controlling the outflow, particularly in central and eastern areas of regions 1, 2, 3, and 6, in the days leading up to the maintenance.

Bokaba added that Rand Water has confirmed that it was aware of the concerns raised by its municipal customers regarding the slow recovery period of its systems during the maintenance period.

“Locals in Soshanguve and Mabopane in Region 1 who are supplied by Rand Water’s Hartebeeshoek Reservoir have been experiencing water supply challenges since the second phase of the maintenance commenced last Monday,” said Bokaba.

“On July 26, Rand Water will not be pumping water at Mapleton for three days and five hours (77 hours).”

Bokaba said this would have a ripple effect on 36 Tshwane reservoirs and bulk meters supplied by Mapleton.

He urged residents to once more use water sparingly during this period to avoid a significant drop in reservoir capacity.

“It must also be emphasised that it is crucial to continue using water sparingly, even after the water utility’s maintenance stipulated times, to allow the system to recover speedily,” said Bokaba.

He said for those areas that will experience a complete shutdown, Tshwane will provide water by tankers.

“Tshwane apologises for the inconvenience that may be encountered as a result of the above-mentioned maintenance programme,” Bokaba.
