Over 200 suspects arrested in Tshwane this weekend

Of these, 123 suspects were arrested for GBV, while other offences included murder, attempted murder, car-hijacking, business robbery, and assault.

Provincial police arrested 241 suspects in the Tshwane District during Operation Shanela this past weekend.

Gauteng police commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni led the law enforcement agencies as they embarked on the weekend’s high-density operations across the province.

The operation was carried out across all five provincial districts, resulting in the arrests of 763 suspects for various offences.

Tshwane racked up the most arrests with 241, followed by Ekurhuleni with 197, Johannesburg with 188, 69 arrests in Sedibeng and 68 arrests in the West Rand.

Of these suspects, 123 were arrested for gender-based violence (GBV).

Crimes for which the other suspects were arrested included murder, attempted murder, car-hijacking, business robbery, and assault.

“Roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, as well as compliance checks on liquor outlets were also conducted. This resulted in the arrest of 189 illegal immigrants, and 58 suspects were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol,” said Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.

The arrested suspects will appear before different magistrate’s courts in Gauteng in due course.
