CPF busts four for illegal electricity connection in Laudium

A concerned resident reported the incident to the CPF, which led to the arrest of the four men busy with illegal electricity connections.

Four men were caught in the act of illegally reconnecting electricity on the corner of 19 and Emerald streets in Laudium on Saturday, July 27, according to the CPF.

Laudium CPF spokesperson Mohammed Noor said a concerned resident reported suspicious activity to the CPF after not being able to reach police.

Noor said CPF members quickly responded to the scene and arrested four suspects who were illegally connecting electricity.

“This included one suspect who was caught on a ladder attempting to illegally reconnect electricity from a pole,” he said.

He said the suspects were handed over to police, who arrested them and opened a case.

“Illegal electricity connections pose significant risks, including electrical fires, electrocution, and damage to the electrical grid,” said Noor.

He said the risks could endanger the lives and property of community members.

Noor said people who engage in such illegal activities would face the full force of the law.

“We urge all residents to report any illegal electricity connections or (such) suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies immediately,” he said.

The Tshwane metro descended on Laudium earlier this month as part of the Tshwane Ya Tima campaign to recover the R125-million locals owe it for electricity.

The campaign led by MMC of Finance Jacqui Uys hit various spots in search of debtors and illegal connections on July 11.

Uys said the metro uncovered 73 incidents of electricity tampering in Regions 4, 5 and 6, which includes Laudium.
