Water tankers dispatched as parts of Tshwane face dry taps

Various areas in regions 2, 3, and 6, are already experiencing a water supply interruption due to Rand Water’s comprehensive maintenance.

Tshwane has started dispatching water tankers to provide relief in areas faced with dry taps as the water utility Rand Water continues with infrastructure maintenance.

According to metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, Rand Water’s infrastructure maintenance on its systems that supply water to the city has caused water supply interruption.

Mashigo said various areas in regions 2, 3, and 6, are already experiencing a water supply interruption due to Rand Water’s comprehensive maintenance programme of their Mapleton System.

“This essential work, which started yesterday, Friday, July 26, is anticipated to take three days and 5 hours (77 hours),” said Masigo.

During this period, the water utility will not pump any water to the Mapleton System, which supplies 36 of Tshwane’s reservoirs and bulk meters.

Currently, the water levels in the following reservoirs are already depleted:

* Garsfontein
* Grootfontein
* Mamelodi R1
* Mamelodi R3
* Mamelodi R4
* Parkmore HL
* Carina Str East
* Carina Str North
* Carina Str South
* Monument Park Tower 1
* Monument Park Ext2 Tower (critically low)
* Olympus

Mashigo said roaming water tankers have been dispatched to the affected customers and will operate from 07:00 until 22:00 during the service interruption.

“Provision is being made to service the affected customers of Region 2. The city will continue to dispatch more water tankers to other areas as and when they experience a water supply interruption,” stated Mashigo.

He added that the city pleads with residents who still have water to use it sparingly to avoid a complete collapse of the system, saying “Residents will be kept abreast on developments.”
