Thousands recruited to Expanded Public Works Programme

Participants were selected through an electronic lottery draw system, ensuring a transparent and independently audited process.

Over 9 000 participants across Tshwane’s seven regions have been recruited to the latest Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Region 1, encompassing key areas such as Soshanguve, Pretoria North, and surrounding neighbourhoods, saw the inclusion of 1 772 individuals, marking a significant milestone in the metro’s efforts to combat unemployment and enhance service delivery.

Deputy Mayor Nasiphi Moya said the recruitment was conducted through an electronic lottery draw system, ensuring a transparent and independently audited process.

Moya said this initiative is particularly timely, as it supplements the conclusion of numerous EPWP contracts set to end in August this year.

“In Region 1, the distribution of participants reflects a commitment to inclusivity and diversity where 756 of the participants were males, 1 016 were females and out of the total number, 888 of them was the youth,” said Moya.

Moya mentioned that the substantial participation of women and youth underscores the metro’s dedication to empowering these demographics, providing them with meaningful employment opportunities that contribute to their personal growth and the betterment of their communities.

“Participants from Region 1 will engage in a variety of roles that are crucial to maintaining and enhancing municipal services.

These roles range from infrastructure maintenance, environmental conservation, public health support, and community safety initiatives.

“Each participant will play an integral part in ensuring the smooth functioning of city services and addressing community needs.”

The metro is set to implement more efficient supervision and accountability measures to further enhance the EPWP’s effectiveness.

The EPWP continues to be a cornerstone of Tshwane’s strategy to reduce unemployment and uplift disadvantaged communities.

“With the successful recruitment and deployment of these participants, the metro moves one step closer to achieving its goals of enhanced service delivery and socio-economic progress.”
