Police investigate after man dies in Brooklyn

Police have opened an inquest after the man was found, allegedly on the side of a street, in the east of Pretoria. Despite efforts by paramedics, the man died on the scene.

Police have opened an inquest after a man died outside a building on the corner of Roper and Brooks streets in Brooklyn, east of Pretoria.

According to the spokesperson for the Old East Safety Forum Jarad Frimmel, responders acted on information received via a call from bystanders who reported a disturbance at an apartment building in Brooklyn.

“Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered a man in his 30s, identified as a doctor from a nearby hospital, in critical condition from multiple injuries,” Frimmel said.

He said despite immediate advanced life-support efforts, the man unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Frimmel said the circumstances surrounding this incident are currently unclear.

“The police are investigating the matter to determine the cause and any potential criminal involvement.”

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said, “on Thursday at approximately 14:17 a 31-year-old man was found at the corner of Roper and Brooks streets in Brooklyn”.

He said emergency services and police were contacted to attend to the scene.
The medical emergency team pronounced the man dead.

Van Dyk said police officers proceeded to the deceased’s apartment and found the door locked.

It was forced open to gain entry.

Van Dyk said the apartment was empty and in disarray.

“During the assessment and search of the apartment, a written note was discovered, which has been submitted as evidence and will form part of the investigation.”

He added that upon completion of the investigation, it will be handed over to a magistrate for finalisation and a decision on the case.
