Residents unhappy about new North waste collection schedule

The metro’s transition to use of new waste management service providers on July 15, has not been a smooth one for many north residents.

Residents of Ward 2 in Pretoria North have been left frustrated and anxious due to delays in waste collection services.

This as the metro’s transition to new waste management service providers on July 15, has not been a smooth one for many north residents.

They complained to Rekord that the schedule was causing significant inconvenience to the community.

Many households in Ward 2 have reported uncollected waste piling up for days, leading to mounting frustration.

Community members have expressed concern about the metro not communicating regarding the new collection schedule.

Jane Booysens said the lack of a clear and consistent timetable has them in the dark about when their waste will be collected.

“Our waste was supposed to be collected on Thursday, but the waste collection people came over the weekend and now we don’t know if the same thing will happen again this week.

“The municipality must be clear and transparent on their plans regarding waste,” said Booysens.

Tshwane has urged residents to be patient as it works to stabilise the system.

According to the metro, any revision to the waste collection schedule will be communicated to the affected customers.

Tshwane announced the introduction of new waste management contractors after the previous contract expired on July 12.

MMC for Environment and Agriculture, Ziyanda Zwane said the normal waste collection schedule would remain unaffected.

“The old contract came to an end on July 12 and the new one starts on July 15 for three years,” Zwane said.

In response to the delays, the metro provided contact details for residents to report their experiences.

During the city’s recent budget speech, Finance MMC Jacqui Uys highlighted the significant investment allocated to the Environment and Agriculture Management Department.

With more than R2-billion allocated for the 2024/25 financial year, the metro is determined to improve its waste management services.

However, the ongoing dispute with former subcontractors and the challenges of implementing the new contract have cast a shadow over these plans.

The dispute between Tshwane and the former subcontractors began when the metro introduced a catch-up plan for household waste collection, following disruptions with the appointment of new service providers.

This has exacerbated the frustration of residents who are eager for the return to reliable and consistent waste collection services.
