Residents urged to ignore fraudulent letter calling for landgrabs in Soshanguve

Tshwane has warned of a fraudulent letter making the rounds in Soshanguve encouraging residents to occupy city land.

Residents of Tshwane and those looking to purchase vacant land in Soshanguve are being warned about a false metro resolution advising for land in extension Block S to be occupied.

The false notice purports to be a valid metro document, with the Tshwane metropolitan letterhead and signature by an official dated July 22, 2024.

The notice urges members of the public to occupy all vacant stands next to Jabulani secure centre and Kondelelani Secondary School, in Block S, Soshanguve.

Tshwane Speaker of council, Mncedi Ndzwanana, said the metro warned residents about the false letter circulating within the Soshanguve informal settlement.

“After a brief investigation, it is noted that the letterhead and signature of the Director: Petitions was used from a letter of acknowledgement that was sent, on a ‘Petition to request formalisation of an informal settlement and services (water and sanitation and temporal electricity) in Ward 26, Region 1’.”

He said it is apparent that the petitioners or the person(s) committed fraud by amending the petition’s acknowledgement letter to suit their illegal conduct.

According to Ndzwanana, the Office of the Speaker is filing a police report to ensure the matter is properly investigated.

“The Chief of Police has also been notified about the fraudulent letter and the potential for illegal land occupation.”

The community of the Soshanguve informal settlement is urged to disregard the fraudulent letter.

“The petition, dated March 12, 2024, received by the Office of the Speaker, is currently being processed by the relevant department.

Petitioners will be informed of any resolutions in due course.”
