Incomplete applications threaten successful placement, warns Gauteng MEC

Parents are urged to select a minimum of three and a maximum of five schools because selecting only one or two jeopardises the chances of their children being placed in the instance of those selected schools reaching full capacity.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane has raised concern over the high number of incomplete online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placement for the 2025 academic year.

He said to date 146 268 applications remain incomplete, potentially jeopardising the placement of learners in Gauteng public schools.

Chiloane said it was essential that the applicants complete all five steps in the process to secure placements.

The steps are as follows:

– Register Parent/Guardian details

– Register Home Address details

– Register learner details

– Apply to a minimum of three schools and maximum of five schools. Chiloane said only choosing two schools jeopardises the chance the child being placed.

– Upload documents to the system or submit them physically to the selected schools

“Applications that do not meet these requirements are considered incomplete and will not be processed.

Parents are urged to pay close attention to SMS notifications from the online admission system, which provide updates on application status and incomplete steps,” said Chiloane.

The MEC said 610 839 applications have been recorded to date –255 160 for Grade 1 and 355 679 for Grade 8.

He said the application window closes on Monday, August 12.

“Parents must upload certified copies of required documents or submit them physically to all selected schools within seven days of application.

Necessary documents include the parent’s ID or passport, the child’s birth certificate or passport, proof of home address, the latest Grade 7 school report for Grade 8 applicants, and a clinic card or immunisation report for Grade 1 applicants.

“Non-South African citizens are required to submit additional documents.”

The department also prohibited the falsifying of documents, which will result in non-placement of the child.

“Schools and administrators are reminded to verify all submitted documents thoroughly to ensure fair and accurate processing of applications.

The GDE is committed to providing support to parents facing technological challenges.

Assistance is available at all schools and 80 decentralised walk-in centres across the province,” said Chiloane.

To ensure the accuracy and completeness of applications, the GDE advises against using internet cafés, which often lead to errors and incomplete submissions.

“We strongly urge parents to complete the entire application process.

Incomplete applications mean that your child’s placement cannot be guaranteed.

Please double-check your profile on the system or reach out to the department for further assistance,” said Chiloane.
