Fire destroys shop in Pretoria West

Additional fire resources had to be used to help extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported from the scene.

Tshwane Metro Emergency Services responded to a shop on fire in Pretoria West on the morning of Monday, July 22.

Spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni said the incident was reported to their call centre (ECC) at around 05:02.

He said the ECC immediately dispatched a ladder and a district commander’s unit from Central Fire Station.

“Multiple additional firefighting resources from Philip Nel Park, Atteridgeville and Centurion were also dispatched to the scene,” said Mnguni.

“These included a fire truck, a rapid response unit and a water carrier.”

Mnguni said on arrival, firefighters found a shop on fire and began firefighting operations.

He added that through their swift action they managed to stop the fire that had already spread through the ceiling to the adjacent bakery shop.

“The fire was extinguished around 06:12 and no injuries were reported at this incident.”

He said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Firefighters used additional resources to extinguish the fire.

Mnguni urged residents to be cautious during winter to ensure the safety and well-being of people, animals and property by observing the following precautionary measures:

– If there is any danger of fire exposure to dwellings, like shacks or houses, vegetation or veld fires, dial the toll-free number 107 for emergencies.
– Burning charcoal produces large amounts of carbon monoxide, so do not leave it burning in the house when sleeping.
– Never use fuels that are not designed for your heating unit.
– Unapproved controlled burning must never be carried out (no controlled burning will be approved during this period).
– Never leave children unattended near a burning candle or fire.
– Make sure all candles are placed in safe candleholders.
– Never connect electricity illegally.
– Never overload electrical plugs.
– Never leave an imbawula or coal fire to burn overnight without supervision.
– Extinguish paraffin fires with sand or a fire extinguisher.

“The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department will continue to monitor updates by the South African Weather Service and issue further notices where necessary,” he added.

Mnguni said to report any fire incident, call 107 toll-free or alternatively, call 012 358 6300/6400.
