Year-old boy among three dead in Donkerhoek multi-car crash

The one-year-old boy was flung out of the crashed vehicle and declared dead.

A multi-vehicle collision in Donkerhoek east of Pretoria claimed three lives, including a one-year-old boy on Sunday morning.

First responders from the Old East Safety Forum responded to a three-vehicle collision on the N4 before the Donkerhoek Toll Gate in the early hours of Sunday.

Old East Safety Forum spokesperson Jarad Frimmel said upon the arrival of responders, the driver of one of the vehicles was entrapped in the wreckage.

“Tshwane Emergency Services had to use the jaws of life to free him, but he was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics from Gauteng Emergency Medical Services.”

Frimmel said a man and a woman were also entrapped in the second vehicle, and the jaws of life had to be used to free them too.

“Paramedics treated the woman, but she succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead on the scene.”

Frimmel said further investigation revealed that a one-year-old boy had been flung out of the car with fatal catastrophic injuries.

“There was nothing paramedics could do to assist him, and he was declared dead on the scene,” Frimmel said.

He said two patients were transported to the nearest hospital, one in a critical condition and the other with moderate injuries.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

In a separate incident, shortly after 03:30 on Sunday, the Tshwane Emergency Services, the Tshwane metro police, multiple ambulance services, and the Old East Safety Forum responded to a five-vehicle collision on the N14 between Jean Avenue and the N1.

Frimmel said paramedics treated 13 patients, four of whom were transported to a nearby hospital.

The cause of this collision is also unknown.
