Marabastad wins gold at Reside Awards

The project received its award during a two-day conference at the Sandton Convention Centre from July 17-18.

The Marabastad Townlands Housing Project has been recognised as the Social Housing Development of the Year after winning the Gold Award at the Reside Awards.

The project received its award during a two-day conference at the Sandton Convention Centre from July 17-18.

On April 10, Minister for Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi and her deputy Pam Tshwete gave the approved tenants keys to their new Marabastad Townlands Housing Project homes after the project that started in 2017 came to completion.

Tshwane Mayor, Cilliers Brink said the Townlands have made it possible for inner city residents to access CBD amenities from affordable accommodation.

“The Townlands Social Housing Project has made it possible for Tshwane residents to have access to subsidised housing opportunities in the inner city that are pleasant, green and safe. The project is centrally located, close to jobs and business opportunities, and therefore it enables occupants to save on transport costs,” Brink said.

The Townlands Social Housing development in Marabastad has 1 200 units, making it the largest social housing development in South Africa.

“The project is indeed a highlight and a major success story for our administration. It is a multimillion-rand development that boasts 1 200 units of various sizes and includes modern amenities, such as a community hall, football pitch, netball and volleyball fields, an outdoor gym and other recreational facilities,” Brink said.

The mayor thanked the MMC for Human Settlements, Ofentse Madzebetela and Housing Company Tshwane (HCT) for the work they’ve managed to do.

The mayor said the metro is currently working on three other social housing developments, namely the Chantelle Housing Project in Pretoria North (with 1 000 units), the Timberland Housing Project in Arcadia and the Sunnyside Housing Project. Timberland and the Sunnyside projects are still currently in their planning phase.

This social housing award follows three South African Local Government Association (SALGA) awards that the city recently received for improved financial management.
