Update | Grade seven learner who fell from school building dies

The learner was airlifted to Milpark hospital for medical care and has died in hospital

A learner from Laerskool Mayville who fell from the second-floor balcony of the school building earlier this week died on Saturday afternoon.

“It is with heavy hearts that we have to inform you that Clair has passed away,” the school said in a post on social media.

“We want to express our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. We pray for God’s comfort at this time,” the post read.

The school requested that the public please allow her family to process the death of their beloved child.

“Please pray still for them.”

“Thank you so much for everyone’s prayers and support.”

The incident happened on Thursday morning during school hours.

Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona said that the department was aware of the incident.

“The Department is aware and deeply concerned about the said incident.”

Mabona said that on Thursday morning during school contact time, a grade seven girl fell from the second-floor balcony of the school building.

“The Emergency Medical Services and the parents of the learner were immediately called,” he said.

The learner was airlifted to Milpark Hospital for medical care.

“We have launched an investigation into circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Mabona said that the department had also dispatched its Psycho-Social Support team to the school to offer necessary support to all affected by the incident.
