Centurion ward committee elections around the corner

The Tshwane ward committee elections are expected to take place over two weekends between July 20-21 and July 27-28.

The Tshwane ward committee elections are just days away as residents of Centurion are set to cast their votes on July 21.

Residents will have the opportunity to elect their preferred candidates to represent their wards between July 20-21 and July 27-28, when the elections are expected to take place.

Ward committees promote community participation, inform the municipality of the needs of residents, and are responsible for keeping residents informed about municipal activities.

Tshwane Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana said that the nomination process was concluded on May 3 and involved data consolidation and an information-checking process to ensure compliance with the submission requirements.

All applicants were required to adhere to the criteria that the Office of the Speaker and Independent Electoral Management Body (IEMB) had established.

Centurion residents in the following wards can cast their votes at the following venues from 08:00 to 18:00:

– 48 – Heuweloord Community Hall

– 57 – No election, Ward affirmation

– 61 – Laudium Civic Centre

The office of the Speaker published the list of qualifying nominees on the Tshwane metro’s website.

He said that the lists published only include the names of nominees who qualify to partake in the election.

“Six or more nominees contest in a ward, as Section 3(1)(b) of the Ward Committee By-law states that the composition of the ward committees requires no more than 10 members or, where applicable, no less than six members,” he said.

In April, Electoral Committee chairperson Dana Wannenburg said that if the committee has fewer than six members, the Speaker’s office could nominate more.

“Elected ward committees would serve for a period of five years,” said Wannenburg.

He added that the metro has not had ward committees in more than seven years.
