Central organisations reach out to elderly for Mandela Day

Everyone present cleaned the premises and donated food, cleaning materials and blankets to the old-age home.

The Pretoria Central police and partnering organisations recently refurbished the Inn’s old age home as part of their 67 minutes of service for Mandela Day.

Other stakeholders included the SAPS Forensic Division, CPF, Community Safety, Tshwane District Health Services, crime prevention wardens, the University of Pretoria, the Pretoria Technical College, Brilliant College, a Marabastad businessman, and Tshwane Leadership Foundation.

All participants joined hands to clean the premises and donate several food parcels, cleaning materials and blankets.

“We want to thank all who were present today and said this is not just a 67-minute session but a mandate that should be carried out 365 days a year,” said the head of the forensic division, Brigadier Mpho Morapedi.

The Inn facility, located on the corner of Lillian Ngoyi and Jacob Mare streets, was built to house elderly people struggling to survive on state grants and it opened on October 1, 2020.

The facility can house around 55 people and the project was spearheaded by the TLF and Yeast City Housing.

The Inn was conceptualised during lockdown as shelters for homeless people faced an uphill struggle. Homeless people with no family support in the city had nowhere to go. This subsidised housing facility is for older people, specifically homeless pensioners receiving Sassa grants but without any family.
