Police celebrate Mandela Day with Centurion learners

Police spent the day at a primary school gardening, planting seedlings, and painting 14 classrooms.

Tshwane police came together on Tuesday to spend time and spread joy with learners at Laezonia Primary School in honour of Mandela Day.

The initiative was led by Tshwane district commissioner, Brigadier Samuel Thine, in collaboration with personnel from the Correctional Services department and members of the Tshwane CPF.

Police spokesperson Johan van Dyk said police engaged in several activities, including gardening, planting seedlings, and painting 14 classrooms.

He said learners received gifts with essential items such as a deep freezer, hygiene packs, books, 1 807 loaves of bread, cooking utensils and clothes.

“Despite operational commitments on Mandela Day, officers gathered to demonstrate care for the learners beyond their law enforcement duties,” said Van Dyk.

In his speech, Thine told learners each child was special and the police were dedicated to prioritising the needs of children and supporting communities in distress.

He shared valuable life lessons with the schoolchildren and encouraged them to prioritise their studies and pursue paths that lead to realising their dreams and positively impacting others.

Van Dyk said police also conducted a roadblock near the school where vehicles were searched.

He said safety pamphlets covering topics such as gender-based violence, safety tips, and crimes against children were distributed.

Thine extended his heartfelt appreciation to all the participants for dedicating and committing their time to make a significant difference in children’s lives.
