National police presence in north makes dent in crime

The team was brought to the area on May 14 to help local police fight crime.

The stabilisation team that was deployed in the northern parts of Pretoria on May 14 to help local police fight crime has made good strides in keeping the communities safe.

Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the team arrested 51 people for several offences and recovered 26 vehicles believed to be hijacked or stolen.

The deployed officers have also helped in the recovery of stolen vehicles.

Muridili said between June 9 and July 14 seven unlicensed firearms were also seized.

She said the team was launched and presented to the affected communities by the Ministry of Police on May 14.

“The affected police stations are Soshanguve, Rietgat, Loate, Mabopane and Akasia,” said Muridili.

Muridili said the team consists of members of various law enforcement and security agencies, including Crime Intelligence, Visible Policing, detectives, Flying Squad, K9, Tshwane metro police, Gauteng Traffic, and the CPF.

Drugs seized

She added that they will be supported by specialised SAPS units, including the Tactical Response Team, National Intervention Unit, Public Order Policing, and Drone units.

“The operations will continue until the situation in the affected areas returns to normal,” she said.

She said the focus is on bringing crimes such as road spiking, online shopping-related robberies, drug-related crimes, car hijacking, and theft of motor vehicles under control.

The team was introduced to strengthen local policing following the devastating murder of a five-year-old in a hijacking recently.

Police spokesperson Lirandzu Themba said the team, supported by over 60 vehicles, would be in the area for three months.
