Tshwane vows to meet September deadline for clean water supply to Hammanskraal

The metro has hired a new expert team to oversee the Rooiwal project and significant upgrades are expected to be completed by 2026.

The Tshwane metro has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering clean water to Hammanskraal by September,
despite controversies surrounding the Rooiwal project, including the suspension of five senior officials implicated in the R295-million tender award.

Deputy mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya said the mayoral subcommittee in charge of the project has conducted monthly oversight visits.

She said this is to ensure that the upgraded facility will deliver clean water within the deadline.

Moya, the MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning, Hannes Coetzee, and the MMC for Utilities and Regional Operations and Coordination, Themba Fosi, recently visited the site for inspection.

“There are significant strides made in upgrading the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant, with a new professional service provider appointed, setting the stage for substantial work to be completed by 2026,” said Moya.

She said the progress includes improved site security, equipment management and ongoing sewage effluent pumping.

Moya added that the subcommittee also made a site visit to Magaliesberg Klipdrift Water Treatment Works on Friday, July 5.

“We met with the Magalies Water Board, led by Deputy Chairperson Yvonne Matolong, to assess the progress of the Magalies Water Package Plant project,” she said.

“This project aims to deliver 50 million litres of water from the Pienaars River to augment supply from Temba Water Treatment Works.”

She said allied efforts of the Magalies and Rooiwal projects will ensure that a portion of Hammanskraal residents will have access to clean water by September.

Moya added that Tshwane is grateful for the collaboration of Hammanskraal residents in completing water meter audits earlier than expected.

“We are dedicated to continuing our efforts to enhance water services for our communities and are encouraged by this progress,” she said.

During their oversight visit, Fosi commended Magalies Water Board for the great job it was doing.

He said the deadlines set for providing Hammanskraal residents with clean water will be met.

Ward councillor Michael Ndlovu said the developments made on-site bring hope that the people of Hammanskraal will have a better life.

“This progress gives us hope that people will have a better life because water is a basic need for everyone,” said Ndlovu.
