Over 200 000 Grade 1 and 8 online applications received on first day of applications

Parents are urged to select a minimum of three and a maximum of five schools because selecting only one or two jeopardises the chances of their children being placed in the instance of those selected schools reaching full capacity.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, over 229 000 Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications were received on the first day of the 2025 online admissions period,

Education MEC Matome Chiloane said this achievement marks a new era in the efficiency and accessibility of the admissions process for Gauteng public schools.

The application period for 2025 online admissions commenced on Thursday, July 11.

“Within the first hour alone, the system had recorded a total of 79 073 applications, demonstrating the system’s capacity and the eagerness of parents and guardians to secure placements for their children.

“By 16:00, the number had soared to 229 885.

“This total included 100 291 applications for Grade 1 and 129 564 for Grade 8, reflecting the high demand for educational opportunities in the region,” said Chiloane.

The MEC spearheaded the official launch of the 2025 online admissions system at Diepsloot Youth Centre.

During the event, he assisted parents and guardians with the application process, ensuring a smooth and supportive experience for those applying for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements for the next academic year.

Chiloane said the application window will remain open until August 12 this year, allowing ample time for parents and guardians to complete the necessary steps.

“To further assist parents and guardians, the Gauteng Department of Education has established various support mechanisms.

“Parents are urged to visit district offices or one of the 80 centres for assistance.

“Additionally, the GDE call centre, reachable at 080 000 0789, and dedicated WhatsApp line, 060 891 0361, are available for further help and inquiries.”

Applicants are encouraged to upload certified copies of the required documents directly onto the system or submit them at the schools they have applied to within seven school days.

Chiloane expressed immense pride in the success of the first day of the online admissions.

“We are proud of this monumental achievement, processing such a high number of applications on the first day.

“This success reflects the improvements made to the system, which operated smoothly and the demand for the quality education provided at Gauteng public schools.

“We are delighted by the positive feedback from parents who completed their applications without issues and reassure others not to panic as the system will be open until August 12,” stated Chiloane.
