Metro hits Laudium to collect millions owed

One particular property had reconnected their electricity illegally three times after the Ya Tima team disconnected it on multiple occasions.

Tshwane Ya Tima campaign hit Laudium in Centurion in a bid to recover the R125-million locals owe the city for electricity.

The campaign led by MMC of Finance Jacqui Uys hit various spots in search of debtors and illegal connections on July 11.

The Ya Tima team found 52 illegal connections in the area.

Uys said the metro uncovered 73 incidents of electricity tampering in Regions 4, 5 and 6, which includes Laudium.

“During the operation, we visited a property that owes the city R2.6-million and had been disconnected three times in three weeks but managed to reconnect illegally each time. The property has since been disconnected from the electricity pole and we will be taking further action against the owners for electricity theft and tampering with city infrastructure,” Uys said.

Uys asserted that while the Ya Tima campaign has recovered lots of money owed to the city, the effort also goes out intending to assist residents with their billing queries, indigent applications and affordability assessments as well.

The MMC said the metro tries to assist residents. The burden is on them to ensure that their accounts are up to date.

“While we do our best to reach out and assist, it remains the responsibility of residents to ensure that their accounts are up to date. Residents are encouraged to come forward to make payment arrangements with the city when they run into financial difficulty. Failure to do this will result in disconnections. I want to thank all the residents who paid their accounts in full and on time. You are helping us to build a city that works for all its people,” Uys said.
