Monument hosts Mampoerfees for the first time

Organiser Anton Grib says the festival hosted around 3 500 attendees and 130 stalls this year.

The Mampoerfees came round this past weekend as thousands flocked to the Voortrekker Monument to partake in the annual festival.

Attendees enjoyed 100 stalls selling mostly handmade and original items, viewing veteran cars and tractors, tasting traditional mampoer and witblits, freshly brewed beer and other brews from various distillers as well as live music and boeresport.

One of the organisers, Anton Grib, says the festival hosted around 3 500 attendees and 130 stalls this year.

“The Voortrekker Monument is big and the nice thing is you can have the Boer sports on one side, music stages on the other, food stalls, the mampoer tastings. It’s just fun for the little ones, big ones, everyone,” Grib said.

The Mampoerfees has been taking place annually for the past 40 years and Grib thanked the Voortrekker Monument for making the space available to them.

One boeresport locals participated in was the Boer Dra ’n Vrou, which originated from Finland in the 1800s whereby participants race through various obstacles while carrying their wives.

The couple with the fastest time wins the wife’s weight in beer.

Co-founder, Louis Albert, says they added a twist to the prize where the winning pair would not only win the beer but a spa day for two as well.

“It’s going to tickle your funny bones and get some laughter in you and it’s just a lot of fun. We want to get this thing running and booming because the audience has shown that they do love this, so every month we definitely want to host one,” Albert says.
