Police arrest 512 in various operations over the weekend

Police tackled the Moot and Villieria policing areas with targeted operations.

Tshwane police, security services, and community groups arrested 512 suspects for various crimes over the weekend.

“Over the weekend, Tshwane Police, led by Brigadier Samuel Thine, executed their duties tirelessly,” said Tshwane SAPS spokesperson, Johan van Dyk.

He said that the operations involved collaboration with various government departments, including Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic, local law enforcement such as Tshwane Metro Police Department and Community Policing Forums.

Police patrolled crime-prone areas, inspections for compliance, and crackdowns on illegal alcohol sales.

“By the end of the weekend, 239 individuals were arrested for offenses like assault, housebreaking, public drinking, driving under the influence, and armed robbery with normal Police actions at Police stations across Tshwane,” said Van Dyk.

In the Pretoria-Moot and Villeria areas, Operation Shanela led to the arrests of 233 suspects.

“[These] included those involved in serious crimes such as one for murder, two for attempted murder, four for armed robbery, five for rape and 65 for Gender-based violence.”

Three tactical groups of officers were deployed to patrol the Pretoria-Moot and Villeria areas, leading to the inspection of 15 liquor premises and the closing of three liquor premises.

Police confiscated 35 780 ml of illicit liquor as the premises were not complying with liquor regulations.

The operation also saw 28 undocumented immigrants detained for deportation, with six persons being arrested and fined for drinking in public.

“During the operation, 1141 individuals and 462 vehicles with 82 vehicles being tested to determine if they have been stolen, with fourteen premises also being searched,” said Van Dyk.

The searches resulted in arrests of 11 persons for drunk driving and one suspect for drug possession and dealing when 13 ziplock bags containing various drugs were found in his possession.

A suspect was also arrested in Menlo Park after the suspect was caught in the process of allegedly breaking copper pipes from a wall in Umgazi Street.

Police had not responded to inquiries about the crime by the time of publishing.

However, according to Dana Bloem from CSI Security, the suspect was allegedly caught in possession of heroin (nyaope), breaking tools, and copper pipes.

“Additionally, the suspect had stripped a vehicle in the yard, removing items including the computer box module,” said Bloem.

He said that the suspect was handed to the SAPS shortly after the suspect was caught.
