Shuffle to attorney sees murder-accused traffic officer case postponed

The formal bail hearing for the murder-accused traffic officer was remanded after announcing a new attorney.

A new attorney has stepped forward to represent a Mamelodi murder-accused traffic officer accused of killing his 33-year-old wife.

The 53-year-old traffic officer is facing a charge of murder, housebreaking and pointing a firearm.

This comes after his previous legal attorney of record withdrew which led to the case being postponed to July 5.

Senior prosecutor Advocate Anne-Marie Bendeman said the case was postponed to give the new attorney some time to prepare for the matter after the accused appeared in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 24.

Bendeman said the accused will be appearing for his formal bail hearing, represented by his private attorney.

“He allegedly shot his wife multiple times on April 1 around 04:50 in front of her two children, using his service pistol,” said Bendeman.

“He handed himself over to the police the same day.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo also confirmed these details.

“The suspect handed himself to the police at Mamelodi East,” said Mavela.
