Young dancers portray grief through dance

A dance inspired by a choreographer's personal loss exposed young dancers to theatrical dancing.

Loss and grief inspired theatrical choreography and the dancing show, “Anatomy of Grief”, which brought back life to the theatre world at the Arena State Theatre on the weekend.

Producer and co-choreographer Fayme Hattingh said the purpose was to show young dancers of today that the theatre world is still much alive.

Hattingh said the overall impact was amazing.

“The experience the dancers had was absolutely amazing and what we set out to do was definitely achieved.

“We set out to touch people through our storytelling and to do this while not sacrificing the art of theatre and contemporary dance with cheap dance gimmicks but using pure raw dance to achieve this.”

She said the dance competition world has taken over, and become very popular but after spending many years in this environment, she wanted to show her dancers that there is something more unique and interesting than competitions.

“The theme of the show was grief, not only through someone dying but also losing a friend, a relationship ending and being a third wheel in a relationship.”

Hattingh, who suffered a personal loss wanted to show that grief and loss come in many ways and decided she wanted to speak her grief through dance.

“Seeing the company of young dancers truly portray their emotions, learn to leave their comfort zones and dance their hearts out was the highlight of the show.”

She said spending a week in the theatre with them and educating them on the magic of theatre, the etiquette and the ways things are done, was also a highlight.

“Many dance teachers, studio heads and people from the dance industry attended which was truly amazing to see the Joburg and Pretoria dance scene coming out to support us,” she concluded.
