Health department warns of job and bursary scam

The advert dubbed the “Youth Opportunities Hub” invites residents to apply to study for a diploma in nursing at one of the Gauteng College of Nurses campuses.

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has urged residents to beware of a fictitious job and bursary advert on social media.

It said the scam seeks to exploit job seekers’ socio-economic circumstances.

The advert dubbed the “Youth Opportunities Hub” invites residents to apply to study for a diploma in nursing at one of the Gauteng College of Nurses (GCoN) campuses.

The department said it only advertises vacancies or bursaries through official government channels such as the Department of Public Service and Administration, the Gauteng online portal, official departmental social media sites and mainstream media.

“The public must not fall prey to these bogus adverts. Those behind these fake opportunities know that when people are desperate, they let their guard down. GCoN has not yet advertised nursing opportunities for the 2025 intake,” said GDoH Head of Communication, Motalatale Modiba.

Modiba says the public should remain cautious when asked for money in exchange for consideration or promise of a job, bursary or guaranteed stipend.

“We will never ask people to pay for a study bursary, internship or job opportunity within the department. The minute you [are] asked to pay something, that is a clear indication that this is a bogus opportunity. These should be reported to the police, no money is required to apply for jobs and bursaries in the public service,” Modiba said.

He also said that job seekers should compare the ads they come across on social media against those found on known government channels for verification.
