Tshwane has allocated R8-million to improve the Atterbury Road A Re Yeng Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route from the Lynnwood Road and Justice Mahomed Street intersection.
The metro hopes the improvement will ensure safety for both passengers and pedestrians on this Pretoria east route.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the upgrades commenced in the first week of June.
Mashigo said the Line 2b maintenance (Work Package WP2) is all about resurfacing of Atterbury Road between Lynnwood Road and Justice Mahomed Street.
He said the current maintenance work involves the renewal of the existing infrastructure, to extend its lifespan.
Mashigo said this would save the city rebuilding cost since the upgrades are within the alignment of the BRT.
“This will improve the safety of both passengers and pedestrians. It will also improve the riding quality for commuters,” said Mashigo.
“In addition to the current rollout of line 2B project of upgrading the intersections, there was a need to resurface the existing road infrastructure to bring back its original state so it will be able to carry the bus loads and enhance the level of service.”
The scope of work entails:
– Milling of the existing 40mm asphalt surfacing
– Patching of cracks
– Resurfacing (40 mm overlay)
– Road markings and signage.
Mashigo said the following intersections will be affected:
– Corner Lynnwood and Atterbury roads
– Corner Justice Mahomed and Atterbury roads
Mashigo said the upgrade to the BRT intersections is an extension of ongoing operations between the Pretoria CBD, Hatfield and Menlyn en route to Denneboom.
“There won’t be any closure of the road sections since the contractor will be working at one side of the road at given times, however there are possible lane reductions.”
The metro will also ensure continuous access to all adjacent properties.
“This has been set up in the traffic management plan,” said Mashigo.
Last year the metro started the R146.8-million intersection upgrades to the road network and non-motorised transport infrastructure along Lynnwood Road, University Road and Atterbury Road.
These upgrades entailed the road being broadened, while smaller bus stations were built at different parts of the roads.
Local ward councillor Siobhan Muller said it is expected that the maintenance work will be completed by end of this month.
Muller urged motorists and pedestrians to take note of the temporary road signage.
“The public is advised to be vigilant of construction vehicles that will also use the affected roads.”
Muller said a traffic accommodation plan has been devised to ensure that traffic flow is adequately managed during the maintenance process.
She said the scheduled maintenance work will include resurfacing, pothole repair and road markings on the BRT.
Muller said motorists should plan for extra travel times, as there might be delays on the road owing to construction vehicles and lane reductions
