Tierpoort farm attack: Two intruders dead, one arrested

The grandson allegedly shot two suspects after they attacked his grandmother.

Two suspected home invaders were shot dead and one was arrested after an attack on a family farm in Tierpoort, east of Pretoria.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, three armed men broke into the farmhouse on June 6 around 18:00 and attacked an elderly woman.

Van Dyk said a man who was in his room rushed out to investigate when he heard his grandmother screaming.

“The grandson grabbed his firearm and rushed out.”

Van Dyk said the man saw an armed man assaulting his grandmother.

“In shock, he fired a shot at the suspect, fatally wounding him,” said Van Dyk.

He said when the man turned around, he saw two more men approaching him.

“He fired more shots in their direction, wounding one more.”

Van Dyk said the home invaders ran out into dense bushes.

The police and security companies swiftly arrived on the scene and during a search of the bushes, found two men hiding.

“One was bleeding from a gunshot.”

He said the injured man was taken to hospital under guard where he later succumbed to his injuries.

He said the Welbekend police arrested the other man on suspicion of house-robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted murder.

“The elderly woman was taken to hospital seriously injured,” said Van Dyk.

CEO of Echo-1 Security company, Etienne Schoeman said his guards received a call about an attack on a farm of a non-member in Tierpoort.

“Units were dispatched as well as two members of the Boschkop Reaction Force.”

Schoeman said on arrival, they found the traumatised family still inside the house.

“The family told the members that three armed suspects had attacked them and badly assaulted the grandmother.”

They were informed that a family member retaliated and shot and killed a suspect inside the house and that the other two suspects ran off.

Schoeman said Echo-1 Security deployed a K9 and together with police found another wounded suspect hiding in the mountain.

He said Welbekend police attended the crime scene.

“One firearm was recovered on the scene.”

He said the family dog was also wounded and only returned the next day.

“The grandmother suffered a concussion and was transported to a private hospital.”
