Rising rugby star selected to play for Blue Bulls

A 16-year-old boy from Pretoria North’s rugby journey reaches new heights as he secures a spot on the Blue Bulls Noordvaal team.

Tyler Camphor, a talented young rugby player from Pretoria North, has been selected to play for the Blue Bulls U16 team.

Born in Cape Town, Camphor moved to Pretoria North with his family at a young age.

Camphor is now 16 years old and a Grade 11 learner at Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz.

His love affair with rugby began at the tender age of six when he started playing bulletjie rugby at Laerskool Voortrekker Eeufees.

He has since developed his skills, playing various positions including fly-half, fullback, and currently right wing.

Camphor’s journey to the top began with a successful trial at Curro Hazeldean, followed by a second round of trials at High School John Vorster on May 7.

He then took to the field at Loftus on May 28, to play against the Lions in a trial game.

His hard work paid off on May 31, when he was officially selected for the Blue Bulls Noordvaal A team.

Camphor draws inspiration from professional rugby players Kurt Lee Arendse and Chestlyn Kolbe, who are known for their impressive work ethic and dedication to their craft.

His ultimate goal is to play for the Springbok team, a dream he hopes to achieve through his selection to the Blue Bulls U16 team.

Camphor said balancing school and rugby can be challenging, but he has learned to manage his time effectively.

“After school, I attend my rugby practice and when I get home I do my homework and study in the evening,” Camphor said.

His hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed with his selection to the Blue Bulls U16 team. It is a testament to his abilities.

“I feel honoured, proud, and excited to be selected for the Blue Bulls U16 team. I was shocked and happy when I heard the news,” he said.

Camphor said his goals for the tournament are to build good relationships with his teammates and coaches and win the tournament.

He acknowledges that there may be pressure, but he is focused on doing his best and making his family and team proud.

In his spare time, Camphor enjoys studying and hopes to one day become an architect.

Camphor advised young players like him to “always work hard, don’t let others discourage you, and believe in yourself”.

As Camphor takes to the field with his teammates, he will be carrying the hopes and dreams of his family and coaches.

Camphor said his mother Genine has been a constant source of support, encouraging him to pursue his dreams and push himself to be his best.

Genine beams with pride when asked about her son’s achievement.

“We are incredibly proud of Tyler and all his hard work. He has always been passionate about rugby, and it’s amazing to see him achieve his goals,” she said.

“I’ve been to every one of his games, and I’ll continue to support him every step of the way,” she added.

His coach, Frans Erasmus said he is a skilled player. “He knows his way around the field and he is always physically prepared.

“Tyler is an exceptional talent with a great work ethic. He has a bright future ahead of him, and we are excited to see him grow and develop as a player,” he said.
