Deputy mayor disheartened by amount of Illegal connections

Moya believes that it’s time to intensify law enforcement customers who have illegal connections, while stressing that the metro is also asking customers to come to its offices and make arrangements to settle their accounts.

Deputy mayor Nasiphi Moya, having led a Tshwane Ya Tima operation in Pretoria West on Monday, June 10, said the amount of illegal connections they came across was disheartening.

Moya is encouraging residents to refrain from tampering with connections and to make arrangements to settle their accounts with the city.

“What is always disheartening when we come out with the Tshwane Ya Tima is the number of illegal connections that we see and also the number of illegal reconnections we see even after our efforts to disconnect and make contact with the customers. Customers still illegally connect and tamper with our infrastructure,” Moya said.

During the west Ya Tima operation, the team had received an anonymous tip-off about a customer who illegally connected electricity in Danville. The team rushed to the location in question and promptly disconnected the property.

“I think it’s time that we intensify law enforcement with these types of customers. But we are also asking customers to please come to our offices and make sure that you make that arrangement. Do not assume that we will not be able to accommodate you, bring your story, bring your documents to the city and we will definitely assist you,” Moya pleaded.

“We continue with Tshwane Ya Tima, because the budget that we just passed in council requires us to collect revenue so there won’t be any customer that is spared. We want everyone who owes the city to pay their bills,” she said.

On June 4, MMC for Finance Jacqui Uys tabled a total budget of R50.6-billion, comprising an operating budget of R48.3-billion and a capital infrastructure investment budget of R2.3-billion for the 2024/25 financial year.

About 49% of the capital budget will be for the prioritisation of the electrical grid and water infrastructure in Tshwane.
