Three bomb squad investigators accused of stealing money after bombing incident get bail

There is CCTV surveillance footage showing the three collecting notes and coins from the scene. The money was never handed in as evidence.

Three police officers who were seen stealing money after a bombing incident at a filling station in Soshanguve were granted  R3 000 bail each after appearing in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s court on Thursday, June 6.

The three officers are bomb squad investigators, stationed in the explosives section in Colbyn and are facing charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice.

They were arrested by the Hawks on Thursday morning.

According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, Captain Lephalala (47), Warrant Officer Ngwenya (33) and Sergeant Sithole (37) were seen on CCTV surveillance collecting notes and coins from the scene and placing them in a bag.

Mogale said one of the suspects was seen taking the bag to their state vehicle before leaving the scene.

An investigation revealed that the money was never handed in as evidence.

“Their court appearance is consequent to their arrest this morning, June 6, 2024 following a bombing incident that occurred on the April 15, 2024 at filing station in Soshanguve.”

“The trio was allegedly seen on CCTV surveillance footage purportedly putting notes and coins into a bag. Investigation revealed that the money from the bag was never handed in as evidence at the SAP 13.”

The case was postponed to August 7.
