Girls (4 and 7) burned alive at home to be laid to rest

Anyone with information should contact their local police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Two girls, who were murdered in Soshanguve, will be laid to rest on Friday.

Tinyiko (7) and Mpfumo (4) Mashaba, were burned to death on Sunday, June 2 around 19:30 after unknown suspects ran amok in Changing Spot Informal Settlement in the north of Pretoria.

According to family spokesperson Klaas Mashaba, the family is still trying to process the tragic incident and appreciates the community’s support.

“We are still traumatised about this incident because no child deserves to die in such conditions.”

Mashaba said police must catch everyone involved in this heartless act.

“We need more police visibility because the family is afraid that the person who did this might come to the funeral to finish what he started.

We urge the community to come forward with the information because that will help speed up the process,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba thanked the community for their support during this difficult time.

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronal Lamola has called for swift action against perpetrators of this horrific crime.

“It is unconscionable that such a horrific incident occurs during a period when our country is commemorating Child Protection Week.

It highlights the urgent need for swift action from law enforcement to bring perpetrators to book.

The full might of the law must be demonstrated to ensure justice for the victims and their families,” said Lamola.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said according to preliminary investigations, the armed suspects arrived at a shebeen and fired shots at patrons.

“The suspects proceeded to a shack in the same area, where they set alight the shack which was sheltering the two girls,” Masondo said.

They were both certified dead on the scene.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were after the father of the girls who was not at home during the incident,” he said.

Masondo said the police are working together with residents and are following the leads that might soon result in the arrest of the suspects.

Anyone with information is urged to visit their local police station or contact Crime Stop on 08600 10 111.
The girls’ memorial service is on Thursday, June 6 at 15:00 at Candle Lighting in Soshanguve Ext 7, Changing Spot.

The girls will be laid to rest on Friday, June 7 at 09:00 at the Soshanguve Crossing Cemetery.
