Two girls burnt to death while sleeping as suspects run amok in Soshanguve

The girls were both certified dead on the scene.

Gauteng police have activated a manhunt for the suspects who shot at six people, killed two and burned a shack in Soshanguve at the weekend, which resulted in two young girls being burnt to death while they were sleeping.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 2 around 19:30 after unknown suspects ran amok in Soshanguve, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.

Masondo said according to preliminary investigations, the armed suspects arrived at a shebeen at Changing Spot Informal Settlement in the north of Pretoria and fired shots at patrons.

“Two of the victims died on the scene and the other four were taken to the nearest medical care centre.”

Masondo said the suspects proceeded to a shack in the same area, where they set alight the shack which was sheltering the two girls aged four and seven.

The girls were both certified dead on the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were after the father of the girls who was not at home during the incident,” he said.

Masondo said the police are working together with residents and are following the leads that might soon result in the arrest of the suspects.

Anyone with information is urged to visit their local police station or contact Crime Stop on 08600 10 111.

The shooting comes after the community of Soshanguve called for better policing as they raised concerns regarding the high rate of crime affecting the neighbourhood.

The community is still reeling in shock after the shooting of five-year-old Ditebogo Phalane.

Ditebogo was shot outside his home when the suspects hijacked his father’s car on May 10.

The killers were formally charged after they appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court last week.
