Local man stages one-man march against DA flag-burning ad

In his memorandum, Seoketsa calls for an apology regarding the advert as he deems it as treasonous and a slap in the face of democracy.

Founder of local NGO, Kool 2B South African Khaya “Kool” Seoketsa, staged a one-man march to the DA Tshwane offices on May 23 against their recent SA flag burning campaign.

The advert published by the DA earlier this month depicts the South African flag burning to ashes ,inferring that certain doom awaits the nation should the ruling party be re-elected.

It was met with widespread controversy and pushback with the official opposition being accused of being treasonous and overstepping the mark.

One such critic is Seoketsa, whose NGO is known for its fierce patriotism and for organising events and initiatives that honour South Africa’s heritage.

Seoketsa handed over a memorandum of demands to the DA offices in Pretoria Central.

“The memorandum was not imploring threats but a grave concern of division that the burning of the flag has caused since the airing of the flag,” he said.

In the memorandum, Seoketsa calls for an apology regarding the advert as he deems it as treasonous and a slap in the face of democracy.

“The ad has caused disharmony and division in our society. It is an insult to our forebears who sacrificed their lives for our newfound democracy,” he said.

No representative from the DA was there to receive his memorandum at the offices in Sammy Marks. Seoketsa left it at reception on May 23.

When asked for comment, the DA referred Rekord to the national response that party leader John Steenhuisen earlier this month at the height of the controversy had relayed to the media and public.

Steenhuisen accused fellow political parties of pandering for votes with their criticism and stated that the party was prepared to take legal measures to ensure its right to freedom of speech was protected.

His NGO has hosted various patriotic campaigns in the 30th year of democracy thus far. Last month, it started the Kool 2B South African Kids Club Zone Movement to garner interest in patriotism among young kids.

This took place at the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History and learners from Atteridgeville, Mamelodi Johannesburg, Cosmo, Tembisa and Soshanguve attended.

The NGO also held an event on April 20 to mark 30 years since the flag was proclaimed. Another engagement was held with the Department of Justice and Correctional Services, educating learners in Mamelodi on April 25.

Leading up to the elections Seoketsa believes it’s important to reflect on how far the country has come and is fighting to continue spreading this message.
