Mabopane retired police officer killed in hijacking

Another hijacking and murder robbed a family and friends of their loved one in Mabopane.

A retired SAPS official Koos Sindane (60) who was shot by hijackers at Winterveldt on Saturday, May 18 was laid to rest on Saturday, May 25.

Sindane’s funeral service was held at his home in Mabopane block X extension and was laid to rest at Odi/Klipgat Cemetery.

He was pronounced dead at Legae Private Hospital after the horrific incident, which left Mabopane in mourning.

Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said when SAPS arrived at the scene, they received information from the witnesses that two unknown men shot the deceased.

The two attacked Sindane immediately after he parked at the gate of his inlaws’ residence.

“Suspects drove away with his car,” he said.

According to Van Dyk, three cartridges were found at the scene and will be sent for ballistic testing.

“The police proceeded to Legae where the deceased was found in the emergency room with bullet wounds on the right side and exit on the left.

He was certified dead by emergency services.”

Sindane’s daughter Mildred said her father’s car was found the following day in Lebanon still in order.

She said the family is devastated, shocked, sad and angry and it feels like a dream or a movie to them and coping without him is hard.

“He was a responsible person who served his community and province with dignity and to his family, a loving, caring father, son, uncle, reliable person and a breadwinner,” she said.

The deceased’s long-time friend Joe Mona-Moagi said the community is devastated.

“Our place of living is no longer safe, we live in fear and while others enjoy three decades of freedom, Soshanguve, Winterveldt and Mabopane’s value of life is reduced to nothing.”

He said lawlessness is the order of the day in their community.

He described Sindane as a loving, respectful, ever-smiling, very neat and handsome person, a father, and most notably a jazz music lover.

“He will be remembered and deeply missed by many he mentored in the jazz fraternity,” he said.

Mildred highlighted that justice must be served not only for the Sindane family but every victim in the country.
