Unisa plans new multipurpose centre to service students and surrounding communities after implosion of Building 30

On May 5, Unisa and SA Demolishers demolished the previous Unisa Sunnyside campus located at 243 Normaal Road.

Unisa says it aims to complete a new multipurpose centre by 2027, which will service nearby communities as it will boast sports and conferencing facilities, as well as academic support services.

The centre is being planned as the university demolished Building 30 in Sunnyside earlier this month.

On May 5, Unisa and SA Demolishers imploded the Unisa Sunnyside campus located at 243 Normaal Road to make way for the multipurpose centre. This as the demolished building’s structure had flaws, according to Unisa.

“The demolition will make way for the construction of a multipurpose centre, which will not only service Unisa staff and students, however also the surrounding communities,” Unisa said.

“The building was vandalised over a period of time and [this] compromised its structure,” Unisa said.

Unisa said the multipurpose centre was still in its development stage.

It said it could not provide a specific date for when construction would start or what the budget would be to erect the facility.

Unisa also said it was not working with external partners on the project, adding that it looked forward to the benefits the centre would provide to students and the surrounding community.

“This is a multi-year project, and it is expected to be completed in 2027. The university is planning to conduct design developments and finalise the internal governance processes related to projects.

“The centre will provide indoor and outdoor sports facilities which can also be accessed by surrounding communities. The centre will also provide conference facilities, restaurants and adaptable spaces to cater for various student support services,” it said.
