Tshwane Bus Service operations remain slightly disrupted

The Tshwane Bus Service (TBS) operations remained slightly disrupted following the abandoning of shifts by SAMWU-affiliated members.

The Tshwane Bus Service (TBS) operations remained slightly disrupted on Wednesday following the abandoning of shifts by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) affiliated members.

In a statement, the City said the union members abruptly abandoned their duties, which partially affected the afternoon operations without notifying management nor giving specific reasons for their actions.

It is believed the employees suddenly demanded to see the City Manager before downing their tools.

“To this end, the City has not received any formal grievance from the protesting employees. However, employees affiliated with labour movement Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU)  honoured their yesterday afternoon and this morning’s shift to ensure that the commuters aren’t severely stranded.”

It also said employees who downed tools were served with an ultimatum yesterday to return to work at 15:00, but they refused.

“They have 48 hours within which to return to work, failing which disciplinary proceedings will be instituted against them.

“Currently, TBS is operating on skeleton personnel with a total of 99 buses from different depots instead of the 160 that service our commuters on weekdays.”

Below is the breakdown of operating buses per depot:

  • C De Wet – 59 out of 104
  • Pretoria North – 23 out of 32
  • East Lynne – 17 out of 23

“The City apologises profusely to the bus commuters who have been adversely affected by the disruption and advises them to make alternative travel arrangements.”

It also said further developments will be communicated in due course.
