Local motorheads roll out the classics

The drivers made various stops at historical sites around the metro.

The Pretoria motor club (PMC) rolled back the times this weekend with its annual pre-war day, on which collectors show off their classic cars.

Pre-war day changed its name from vintage and veteran day this year.

Club member Emil Kushke said the celebration was inspired by several people bringing their older cars out.

The drivers took their restored models for a road trip around historical sites in the city from Voortrekker Monument, to Church Square, Tukkies, Lollipop Roadhouse and back to the clubhouse in Silverton.

The roadhouse is a significant spot for the club as the convoy always stops there for an ice cream.

“I think it’s a heritage thing. Kids these days only play PlayStation and on their cellphones and whatever, so to introduce them to the origins of cars and where they came from is special. These cars have no electronics, no fuel pumps, and some don’t have seatbelts. The oldest car here is a 1928 Model A Ford. It’s a nice outing for everyone,” said Kushke.

Every second Sunday, the club hosts a themed event. The event doesn’t only showcase cars as motorbikes can also show off their vintage wheels.

The club turns 58 this year and Kushke said he looks forward to hosting the biggest annual car show on the continent on August 5 at Zwartkops race track.

“There you can see the older, newer and some cars that aren’t launched yet. We are very privileged to have the new Mustang from Lazurus Ford that will be on display, which hasn’t been launched yet. There should be more than 2 000 cars there. So, it’s a must to come have a look,” he said.
