Motorists have been advised to avoid the R21 highway between Olifantsfontein and Nellmapius due to low-hanging power lines.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has warned motorists to avoid the R21 highway between Olifantsfontein and Nellmapius due to low-hanging power lines on Friday.

Eskom said its technicians are on-site working to repair the low-hanging power lines on the R21 highway between Olifantsfontein and Nellmapius (Pretoria).

“The estimated time of restoration is currently not available. We apologise for the inconvenience this causes.”

Meanwhile, the EMPD said motor vehicles are being diverted to Pretoria road and will join the freeway again on Nellmapius just after St George’s hotel.

Here are some general driving safety tips:

  • Do not use your phone while driving. Road legislation dictates that you can only use a device while driving if it does not require you to hold it with your hands or any other part of your body. This includes when you are at a traffic light and your vehicle is at a standstill.
  • Stay within the speed limit and make sure to keep a safe following distance at all times. If you’re not sure what the distance is, stick to the two-second rule.
  • Make sure you are wearing your seatbelt at all times, and check that your passengers are strapped in as well.
  • If you are driving long distances, take regular breaks, because driver fatigue is not something you should ignore. Fatigue signs you should look out for include:
    1. You can’t focus and struggle to keep your eyes open.
    2. Your thoughts drift and might be disconnected.
    3. You find yourself unintentionally veering into another lane or off the road.
    4. You are tired and make driving mistakes.
