Buy-back centres to build foundation for recycling

These facilities do not only benefit the environment but also the Tshwane metro’s coffers.

Tshwane buy-back centres are building a foundation for recycling to provide the local poor with a sustainable livelihood.

The centres are continuing to support waste recyclers and promoting the diversion of waste from landfill sites.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said that the city still has three operational centres each in Atteridgeville, Stinkwater and Hammanskraal.

He said that these centres are a benefit to the environment because they help reduce pollution and conserve natural resources.

“They also serve as community centres by providing space for residents to learn about environmental issues and participate in educational programmes.”

The centres are not only benefitting the environment but also Tshwane coffers.

Mashigo said the centres direct recyclable materials from landfills, reducing waste management and disposal costs for the city.

“This reduces landfill fees, transportation costs and other waste management expenses,” he said.

MMC for Environment and Agriculture Ziyanda Zwane said the centres provide the community with an opportunity to trade or sell recyclable waste.

“The centres cater mainly for the informal sector such as waste pickers, residents, small recycling businesses and any other individuals that would like to sell their recyclable waste,” he said.

He said the centres don’t buy tyres, oil, electronic waste, steel/metals and wood.

PET plastic, tin, cans, glass and paper, including office paper, newspaper, magazines, books, mixed paper and cardboard are welcome.

Zwane said the centres sort, bale and sell recyclable materials.

“These facilities create job opportunities, support waste recyclers and promote diversion of waste from landfill sites,” he said.
