Ceremonial act marks the official installation of Dr Gloria Tomatoe Serobe as the titular head of the university.

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT)’s new chancellor, Dr Gloria Tomatoe Serobe, was welcomed at a ceremony on Thursday, March 14.

Serobe was elected as chancellor of TUT on October 30, 2023.

The ceremony was held at the TB Hall on the Pretoria Campus in Pretoria.

Chairperson of the Council, Ivan Ka-Mbonane, opened the ceremony and Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, introduced the new chancellor.

Maluleke highlighted Serobe’s impressive background as a co-founder of Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (Wiphold) and CEO of Wipcapital.

“She builds from the ground up, working extensively and inclusively with women from all walks of life and creating platforms for women’s economic participation,” he said.

Not only was the new appointment being celebrated but also the fact that TUT is marking its 20th anniversary.

Serobe’s official robing was conducted by the registrar, Dr Michael Mushaathoni.

Maluleke then transferred authority and responsibility to the new chancellor.

This ceremonial act marked the official installation of Serobe as the titular head of the university.

Serobe delivered her acceptance speech, expressing her gratitude for the honour of being the new chancellor and her commitment to serving the TUT community.

She acknowledged the importance of education and the role of the university in shaping the future of its students.

“I look forward to contributing to solutions that may be required to improve the conditions of our young people and the contributions they can make to society,” she said.

The ceremony concluded with a message of congratulations by Serobe’s husband, Gaur, expressing his pride and joy in witnessing this significant milestone in her career.

“You are a living example that education is at its most powerful when it is used not only for the betterment of the individual but also for the upliftment of others,” he said.
