Water to Ekangala and Rethabiseng delayed due to infrastructure tampering

The metro said the Water and Sanitation Department observed a decrease in water pressure and ultimately no water supply in the area this morning due to sabotage of the water valve at Ekangala.

Water pressure will increase after a valve sabotage stint at Ekangala in the east of Tshwane.

It occurred after the metro had just started to pump water at full capacity to Ekangala after successfully installing and repairing a pump and motor at the Bronkhorspruit water treatment plant.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the city is dismayed following the discovery of an intrusion into the chamber housing where the cross-border valve is located.

The valve regulates and controls water flow to the Ekangala and Rethabiseng areas in Region 7.

According to Mashigo, the Water and Sanitation Department observed a decrease in pressure and ultimately, no water supply in the area this morning.

“Upon inspection, it was discovered that the said valve, which is located at Ekangala, had been tampered with.”

Following the tampering, the city promptly enlisted the services of the Tshwane metro police to escort technicians onsite to lift the mechanism used to prevent the water flow.

“The mechanism has since been lifted, and the water pressure is expected to increase,” Mashigo said.

He said the city would like to send out a strong warning to those tampering with its infrastructure that such actions border on criminality, and if caught, they will be arrested and prosecuted.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity around the city’s infrastructure to the Tshwane metro police on 012 358 7095/6.
