Planned maintenance to affect water supply in Moot

Residents are urged to use water sparingly as work on a main bulk supply line to Queenswood East and West reservoirs on Tuesday may affect water supply.

Residents in the Moot might experience a water supply interruption on March 19 for planned maintenance.

The metro said between 09:00 and 21:00 it planned to install a special pipe on the main bulk pipeline supplying the Queenswood East and West reservoirs.

The metro said that the reservoirs would be filled before the shutdown.

Areas that may be affected include:

– Colbyn
– Deerness
– Koedoespoort
– Moregloed
– Queenswood
– Rietfontein
– Rietondale
– Villieria
– Waverley
– Wonderboom South

Ward 84 councillor Roelof Fourie confirmed Monday morning that the maintenance would continue as planned.

The metro recently called on residents to use water sparingly following supplier Rand Water issuing a notice that its stock was down.

On Friday, utilities and regional operations MMC Themba Fosi said that the metro and its Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni counterparts had met Rand Water to discuss the strain on supply.

“Rand Water’s total water storage has plummeted below 30%, necessitating immediate interventions to mitigate the crisis,” said Fosi.

In the past two weeks, Johannesburg residents experienced water outages in some parts of the city.

“The fact that they are struggling to restore water supply in Joburg indicates that the entire supply system, which we share, is under strain.

“As a result, Rand Water has closed its Brakfontein and Rooihuiskraal supply joints with the possibility of affecting large parts of Tshwane.

Fosi said that the metro was implementing measures to address the escalating situation.

“Effective immediately, we will close inlets at Heights HL, Garsfontein, and Kasia while further restricting access to Klapperkop.”

He said this was done to manage demand and preserve the metro’s water resources.

While no suburbs had been directly affected as yet, Fosi said that the metro remained vigilant and was closely monitoring the situation.

The metro urged residents to use water sparingly as it implemented city-wide water restrictions.

“Stick to essentials only.”

Fosi said residents should refrain from watering the garden or filling the pool, rather take shorter showers and conserve water to avoid a “full-blown water crisis”.
