Body of man who fell overboard in Hartbeespoort Dam recovered

Rekord had previously reported that efforts were underway to search for the man after he fell overboard on Saturday.

The body of a 40-year-old man who fell off a boat on the Hartbeespoort Dam over the weekend was recovered on Monday afternoon.

This was according to our sister publication, Kormorant.

The publication quotes Arthur Crewe of the Hartbeespoort NSRI as saying the man and a group of friends were on the stationary boat near the Randburg bridge around 14:25 on Saturday when the man and two women fell overboard in undetermined circumstances.

“The two women were recovered and not injured but the man disappeared beneath the water,” Crewe said.

The NSRI, police, SRU (Strategic Rescue Unit) and the newly established Marine Law Enforcement on the dam were alerted and rushed to the scene.

An extensive search by police and NSRI divers continued until Monday afternoon when his body was found. Crewe said the hyacinth on the dam hampered search efforts at times.

“The family of the missing man were at the scene and was supported by counsellors. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased man during this difficult time,” Crewe said.

Rekord initially reported on the matter after it was announced that efforts were still underway to search for the man.
