Community mourns slain hero

Monitor Net armed response officer Jeoffrey Nemaorani was shot and killed while on duty in The Reeds on February 23.

A memorial service was held to honour the life and work of Jeoffrey Nemaorani (41), a beloved father, friend, colleague and community hero on Friday, March 1.

The armed response officer at security company Monitor Net was known in the community for his dedication to his work.

Nemaorani was gunned down in Marquard Street in The Reeds around 11:00 on February 23.

Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots.

“Jeoffrey’s passing sent a shockwave through our community as he was so brutally taken away from us,” said Paul Gerber, Monitor Net CEO.

“We were overwhelmed by the many calls, emails and visits to express sympathy and support.

We sincerely want to thank everyone who selflessly tried to save Jeoffrey’s life or came to support his family during this time.”

Hoërskool Uitsig staff were first on the shooting scene and fought hard to save his life.

Silas Kobela, a Monitor Net senior officer who worked closely with Nemaorani, said the community had lost a true soldier and hero.

“Jeoffrey was everything at Monitor Net.”

Kobela said Nemaorani was a dedicated man who always put his heart into his work, but always had space in his heart for others.

“When we were at work, he knew I was his senior but the moment we left the gate, I was his friend.”

Kobela said Nemaorani went out of his way to make sure his family were provided for and protected.

Hoërskool Uitsig’s Leon Booysen, who previously worked in the security industry, said “Nemaorani’s murder was like seeing family fall”.

“He was our officer here, helping us here at the school. He is going to be the best response officer with God in heaven,” he said.

The community also paid their respects to the fallen community hero with a community drive and candle lighting on Wednesday, February 28.

Scores of CPF members from various sectors, emergency responders, security cluster workers and community members joined in.

“Last night, a community came together to honour and remember a true hero, Jeoffrey Nemaorani of Monitor Net.

In times of tragedy, it’s the unity and support that shine brightest. Let’s continue to stand together, share stories and spread love in his memory,” said Wierdabrug Sector 3 CPF.

Nemaorani was born in Venda, Limpopo, on March 9, 1982, and died a few days ahead of his 42nd birthday.
