The operations were carried out in the Bronkhorstspruit and Ekangala policing areas and involved high-visibility patrols at crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illegal liquor outlets.

More than 500 people were arrested this past weekend in Bronkhorstspruit and Ekangala during crime prevention operations.

This entailed high-visibility patrols at crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illegal liquor outlets.

Tshwane detective teams apprehended 248 suspects, including 54 individuals involved in gender-based violence crimes (GBV), one suspect for murder, one for attempted murder, five involved in armed robbery and two for rape.

Twenty-three undocumented immigrants were caught and will undergo deportation once the legal processes have been finalised.

One person found in possession of an unlicensed firearm was arrested and charged. The firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to determine if the firearm was used in other crimes.

Three suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs when 13 Ziplock bags containing various drugs and a shopping bag full of dagga with R500 were found in their possession. Another suspect was arrested for the possession of 1 800 illegal cigarettes.

“Three uniformed groups, comprising two tactical teams and a roadblock group, were tasked to police the areas of Bronkhorstspruit and Ekangala.

“The tactical groups inspected 18 liquor premises, with three not being compliant with the Liquor Act and liquor was confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal cases,” said Tshwane police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.

As the weekend wrapped up, another 262 suspects were arrested by police officers from various stations in Tshwane for crimes such as assault, housebreaking, drinking in public and armed robbery.

Throughout the operation, a total of 501 persons, 207 vehicles and 14 premises were searched and 20 Aarto infringement notices were issued totalling R13 250.

The crime operations were a joint mission by members from different SAPS stations and units within the Tshwane policing area and partnering agencies including the departments of Home Affairs, Labour, and Traffic, TMPD, crime prevention wardens, CPFs from respective stations and ward councillors.
